You’re invited to ‘Supervisory approaches to regulation – what, why, when and how?’
Date and time: Friday 23 January 2026, 09.00 –17:30
Location: City St. Georges University, London
With growing recognition that traditional incentive-based regulation may be less effective in addressing certain structural challenges, a key question is whether a more proactive supervisory approach, that emphasises on real-time engagement, assessment of firms’ capabilities (including data management practices), and enhanced operational visibility, may be more appropriate to deliver better outcomes.
This full-day event brings together leading voices from regulation, policymaking, academia, consumer bodies and industry across Europe to explore the design and practical application of supervisory approaches. Discussions will examine why these approaches are gaining prominence, the contexts in which they are most effective, the operational and organisational implications for regulators and firms, and how they can support better outcomes for consumers and wider stakeholders across sectors.
Sir Jon Cunliffe will deliver the keynote address, and the programme features CEOs and senior representatives from regulatory bodies across the UK and Europe, as well as speakers from industry and academia.
The co-chairs of the Conference Organising Committee, Dr Srini Parthasarathy, Partner at Oxera and John Russell, CEO of UKRN, are delighted to welcome you to participate in our marquee event.
The conference will explore the conditions under which supervisory approaches work best and how they compare with traditional incentive-based models. By considering both the theoretical foundations and the available evidence, we will assess the strengths and limitations of these regulatory approaches and offer guidance to help shape the future of regulation.
